Class Rules & Expectations

At Ghawazee Moon Bellydance we expect that students will participate in classes in a cooperative way. To ensure the safety of students and allow all participants to enjoy their classes, we ask students to follow their class rules. Ghawazee Moon Bellydance students are expected to be:

d ependable
a ware
n eat & tidy
c urious
e nthusiastic
r espectful
s upportive

dependable

Students will arrive to class on time with their positive attitudes, workbooks, water bottles and wearing correct dancewear.

Students should have their fees paid when due and return notes in a timely fashion.

Students who agree to participate in performances will attend rehearsals, practice at home and arrive on time with all required costuming and props.

aware

Students are expected to be aware of the potential of injury to themselves and others. Our instructors teach movement in accordance with safe dance practices.

Students are expected to listen carefully to instructions and pay close attention to information about correct alignment and technique in order to avoid strain or injury.

Students should always ask questions to clarify if they are unsure about any directives given to them by the instructor.

All students must participate in warm up activities to ensure they are prepared for the proceeding sections of the class.

Experienced students who are late for class may warm themselves up, less experienced students who miss warm up may be asked to sit out the class for their own safety, and observe from the side.

Students are also expected to participate in cool down at the end of class.

When practicing at home, students should ensure they have warmed up appropriately (with an aerobic activity), and that they also have time for some cooling down (eg: by stretching) before completing their practice session.

neat & tidy

Students are expected to be neat & tidy in appearance and with their belongings.

Students will wear appropriate dance wear to class - dance pants, fitted top, school singlet and hip scarf with their hair tied or pinned back away from their faces.

Experienced students may wear harem pants or a full circle skirts to class. NO jeans. NO short skirts.

Students should keep their belongings (including their student work book) in a dedicated dance bag, these should be placed neatly at the back of the class (with shoes & socks) during class time.

curious

Students are encouraged to ask questions about music, rhythms, extended movements and any other bellydance related topic they are interested in.

Depending upon the question, if asked in class, the instructor may direct the student to ask the question at a more appropriate time (after class, or perhaps via email). Students are asked to respect the instructor's decision in this.

Students may be offered reading materials, weblinks and DVDs to assist in answering their questions.

enthusiastic

Students will arrive to class with a positive attitude and a willingness to participate fully in dance class activities.

Any homework given will be completed and students are expected to want to do some practice of base movement and choreography outside of class time.

Students are also expected to learn some of the history and culture behind the dances we learn, and we hope that students will participate in independent viewing, research and reading about bellydance history and bellydance in general.

respectful

Students are expected to respect themselves, their teachers, fellow students & the school's equipment.

Students will demonstrate respect for self through appropriate costuming and movement choices, accepting and embracing their internal and external beauty, making wise choices in healthy eating and healthy attitudes, and being patient with themselves when learning new movements and dances.

Students should be respectful of their teachers, who have many years of experience in dance and are working to assist students in becoming the best dancers they can be.

Students should listen to instructions and make sensible behaviour choices - other students wish to hear instructions and information too.

Students are expected to be respectful of each other - bullying and negativity will not be tolerated.

Students are expected to respect school equipment, recognising that props are difficult and expensive to replace and care should be taken when removing them from cupboards, using them, and returning them.

supportive

At Ghawazee Moon Bellydance we encourage all students to see bellydance as an opportunity for individual and group creative expression.

Students are encouraged to move out of their comfort zone and experiment with music and movement.

Improvisation is an important part of bellydance, and students will be given the tools to be as creative and comfortable as possible in these exercises.

Creative expression requires that all students take "risks". This will be respected and supported by teachers and students alike.

Students will encourage and support each other in their efforts to learn, during rehearsals and performances.

Criticism will be given constructively and efforts will be made to give positive feedback at all times.

a note for parents

Parents are welcome to observe most classes. However, please respect that there may be times where an observer is too much of a distraction for students and check with the teacher before entering the dance space.

If you wish to ask a question or seek clarification on a matter, please speak to the teacher-in-charge before or after class. There is a 10 minute pause between classes for this purpose. If there is not sufficient time for your discussion, please make other arrangements with the teacher.
